Food truck vs food trailer: which should you buy?

Food truck vs food trailer: ¿cuál te conviene?

The first big choice for a mobile food business is a food truck (kitchen and engine in one vehicle) or a food trailer (a kitchen you tow). Both come new, used, and like new, and the right one depends on how you plan to operate.

When a food trailer fits

  • You already own, or can get, a truck that can safely tow it.
  • You park at the same spot, event or commissary for long stretches and can unhitch and use your tow vehicle for other errands.
  • You want more kitchen space for the money, since there is no engine or drivetrain built in.
  • If the tow vehicle breaks down, the kitchen itself is not stuck in the shop.

When a food truck fits

  • You move several times a day (lunch routes, office parks, multiple events) and want to pull up and serve fast.
  • You do not want to tow, back up or park a trailer in tight spots.
  • You prefer one vehicle to insure and register, and accept that engine repairs take the kitchen offline too.

Questions to ask before you buy

  • Where will you park and prep, and what does your local health department require?
  • For a used or like-new unit: what is the condition of the equipment, electrical, plumbing and (for a truck) the engine? See our like-new food truck checklist.
  • What does your budget look like with a down payment? Financing options are available through partners.
  • How will the unit reach you? Delivery is estimated upon closing.
